The Resuscitation Council UK Immediate Life Support (ILS) course is a practical, one-day programme for healthcare professionals to respond to deteriorating patients or cardiac arrest while awaiting specialist assistance.


About this course

Develop the practical skills and confidence required to recognise a deteriorating adult patient, prevent cardiorespiratory arrest and provide effective immediate treatment during a medical emergency.

The course combines structured assessment, high-quality resuscitation skills and effective teamworking in realistic clinical scenarios.

What You Will Learn

  • Recognise and assess a deteriorating adult patient
  • Use the structured ABCDE approach
  • Identify and treat immediately life-threatening problems
  • Recognise patients at risk of cardiorespiratory arrest
  • Call for appropriate senior or emergency assistance
  • Perform high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Use an automated external defibrillator or manual defibrillator appropriately
  • Deliver simple and effective airway interventions
  • Identify potentially reversible causes of cardiac arrest
  • Participate effectively as a member of a resuscitation team
  • Demonstrate initial leadership during an emergency
  • Communicate clearly and safely in time-critical situations

The course places strong emphasis on early recognition, prompt intervention and effective teamwork to improve patient safety and clinical outcomes.
